Federal Budget 2025 and the Arts

Federal Budget 2025 and the Arts

Dance Umbrella of Ontario joined the Canadian Arts Coalition's Campaign for Culture a national call to protect and increase investment in the Canada Council for the Arts and the Department for Canadian Heritage. More than 50,000 letters were sent to the federal government through the campaign — and this year’s budget clearly reflects that collective advocacy.

The Canadian Arts Coalition (CAC) applauds new and renewed investments in arts, culture, and media programs announced in the Federal Budget 2025. The budget includes over $769 million over five years for arts and culture initiatives, recognizing the vital role our sector plays in Canada’s economy, identity, and communities.

The 2025 budget renews support for essential programs like:
Canada Arts Presentation Fund (CAPF) and Building Communities through Arts and Heritage (BCAH) — ensuring stability for presenters, festivals, and community events across the country.
Canada Music Fund, Telefilm Canada, National Film Board, and the Canada Media Fund — supporting creators and storytellers nationwide.
Canada Summer Jobs and Celebration and Commemoration Programs — offering direct opportunities for artists, arts workers, and cultural organizations.

The government also signaled a new Artist’s Resale Right under the Copyright Act, allowing Canadian visual artists to benefit from future resales of their work — a major step forward for creators.

While the Coalition welcomes these measures, it continues to advocate for stronger, long-term investment in the Canada Council for the Arts to sustain creation and innovation across disciplines.

This budget marks meaningful progress — and a shared win for everyone who spoke up for culture in Canada. These renewed commitments signal stability for presenters and arts workers who have faced uncertainty over the past several years. The continuation of programs like CAPF and BCAH provides vital support for organizations that connect artists and audiences across regions — from local festivals and touring networks to multidisciplinary series that strengthen Canada’s cultural fabric.

For arts service organizations such as DUO, these investments reaffirm the importance of sustained infrastructure that allows small and mid-scale presenters, producers, and independent artists to thrive.

A Message from Yvonne Ng for International Dance Day

Today, on International Dance Day, we pause to recognize the vital, living force that dance is in our lives and communities.

Dance does not simply perform for the world — it listens to it. It notices what is shifting, what is stuck, and what still waits to be named. It reminds us that presence, care, and connection are not luxuries, but essential ways of being.

We invite you to read a powerful message from Yvonne Ng — Ontario’s International Dance Day 2025 Ambassador, Artistic Director of tiger princess dance projects, and Curator of dance: made in canada / fait au canada Festival (d:mic/fac).
Through her words, she reflects on dance as a practice of resilience, tenderness, and embodied truth.

Today, we honour all who make, teach, witness, and sustain dance. Thank you for moving through the world with courage, care, and imagination.
