The Scannura family has made flamenco a way of life and are one of Canada’s principal exponents of the art form. Their commitment to flamenco lies at the heart of this production. Drawing from the family’s latest journey throughout Spain, VIDA FLAMENCA is a concert of new works reminiscent of the authentic flamenco tablaos (clubs) that are the breeding grounds of deep flamenco. The music ranges from melancholic intensity to fiery, dynamic interaction between the musicians and the company of dancers who convey the beauty and strength of flamenco at its finest.

The music is composed and performed by Canada’s foremost flamenco guitarist Roger Scannura who is joined by his ensemble of musicians. Roger Scannura will be releasing his 7th CD titled VIDA FLAMENCA. He has headlined many music festivals in Canada and abroad, the latest being the Zihuatanejo Guitar Festival (Mexico) and the Just Strings Music Festival in Geyserville, California. His wife, Valeria Scannura is the Artistic Director and choreographer and has been performing flamenco since 1985 and created the Toronto-based school and company in 1995. For this project, she has worked closely with daughter, 22-year old Anjelica Scannura (Co-Artistic Director, choreographer and lead dancer) who has been living and breathing flamenco her entire life. A recent Chalmers Professional Training Grant from the Ontario Arts Council allowed her to spend much time in Spain studying and performing flamenco in its purest environment. More info at www.rogerscannura.ca and www.ritmoflamenco.ca

Nightswimming presents Pure Research Toronto 2012
in association with the Centre for Drama, Theatre and Performance Studies, University of Toronto

Research Period: October 15-20, 2012 | Application Deadline: May 1, 2012, 5pm (EST)

There are few places in Canada where in-depth theatrical research can be explored without the pressure of developing or performing a new work. Nightswimming’s unique Pure Research program provides space, money and resources to artists who are pursuing provocative theatrical questions.

Pure Research is designed to foster theatrical experiments that are not specifically linked to the creation of new work. In the spirit of inquiry, we want you to tell us what you don’t know, and how you might be able to answer your questions through a Pure Research workshop. What does that mean? If you have a theatrical question, and can pose it in terms of an experiment, then we’re interested. We supply studio space for up to three days, a fee for the lead researcher and a modest budget for artists and materials. For examples from past sessions, visit Nightswimming Pure Research at www.nightswimmingtheatre.com.

Pure Research Toronto sessions will be conducted in the Glen Morris Studio Theatre at the University of Toronto, in association with the Centre for Drama, Theatre and Performance Studies (formerly The Graduate Centre for Study of Drama). Nightswimming Artistic Director Brian Quirt will be present during each research process to observe, consult and offer assistance. Graduate students may also be involved as participants and observers. As part of their research, successful applicants are required to submit a full report within one month of completing their experiment; the report and additional documentation will be posted on the Nightswimming website.

We are particularly interested in
• artists who view research and development as a long-term process, rather than a short-cut to production
• an artistic spirit of inquiry around text, genre, style and/or production elements

We need a concise but detailed proposal outlining:
• your question, what you want to learn from it, and why you feel Pure Research is the best forum for this investigation
• how you intend to conduct the experiment; this is the most important section of the application
• practical details such as time, people and equipment required

Remember that it is NOT a developmental workshop for a new performance piece
• be honest about what you know, what you don’t know, what you want, and what you’d like to achieve
• applicants outside Toronto are welcomed, but we are unable to provide travel or accommodation for selected projects
• applicants must be available for the research week in October 2012
• before making our final decisions we may contact those whose submissions intrigue us; we also may ask short-listed applicants for further information or a more detailed proposal

What to send us:
• a one page cover letter introducing yourself and defining the application: time requested, estimated budget, specific goals
• a two page (maximum) project description
• c.v. of principal artist-researcher and a list of collaborators, if known
• any relevant support material such as text or prior research
• do not send videos, press clippings, photos, programs, press kits or folders

Applications will be accepted by email only. All applicants will be informed of results by June 15, 2012.

Please email applications to rupal@nightswimmingtheatre.com by 5pm (EST) on Tuesday, May 1, 2012.

Nightswimming is a dramaturgical company dedicated to exploring the boundaries of dramaturgy and performance. We commission and develop new works of theatre, dance and music. For more information, or if you have questions about applying, contact us at www.nightswimmingtheatre.com or 416.504.3898. We look forward to reading your application.

Brian Quirt – Artistic Director | Rupal Shah – Producer

Open/Mix is part contemporary dance class (to open the body and its potential) and part structured improvisation (to mix listening to personal tendencies with reacting to external influences). By defining specific physical articulations, the workshop shifts between:
- addressing certain movement principles that enable the dancer to push and/or refine their relationship with movement, and
- focusing attention to the moment – one’s relationship to space and other people.

Central to both workshop components are the ideas of surprising oneself and finding balance. Open/Mix allows for a practice that moves from the self outwards.

Heidi Strauss trained at the School of Toronto Dance Theatre, as well as in Europe and New York. Since 1994 she has danced professionally for independent choreographers and companies including Sylvain Émard Danse (Montreal), Tribal Crackling Wind, Fujiwara Dance Inventions and Moonhorse Dance Theatre. She began choreographing in 1998 and in 2007 founded adelheid dance projects. She has been dance artist-in-residence at the Factory Theatre since 2008, where she has created 3 full evening works including the Dora-Award winning this time. She has choreographed for The Frankfurt Opera, The Canadian Opera Company, and worked as a movement consultant for Volcano, Necessary Angel Theatre Company and The Tarragon. She has given workshops across Canada, and in the Czech Republic, Germany, Italy and Singapore; in Toronto she teaches regularly at Toronto Dance Theatre, GMD and The Love-In. www.adelheid.ca

March 14 – Touring: Tips for Success
(Dancemakers Centre for Creation)
In today’s ever changing market it can be tricky to launch a touring career in Canada. There are many questions that need to be answered with very few obvious answers. Join us as we explore the ins and outs of touring. These are just some of the questions that will be answered: What are the opportunities for my work in Canada and how do I find the appropriate market places for them? What conference or festival opportunities are there and how do I prepare for them? Once there, how do I meet people, sell my performances and close the deal? Along the way, is it easier if I have an agent? If so, how do I find one and what do they do for me? Once I have a tour, how do I deal with all of the logistical details? How do I finance the tour? How do I actually “get on the road”? Once the performances are over and all of the applause has stopped, what do I do then?

Don’t miss this chance to jump start your touring career in Canada!
