1. What exactly is DUO?

Founded in 1988, DANCE UMBRELLA OF ONTARIO is a non-profit, non-membership-based organization. We provide administrative support to the Ontario dance community. Click HERE for a list of our services.


2. What is the Dance Plant?


DUO's office is the dance plant, with a meeting room and resource library available to the dance community. Click HERE for a list of free services available.


3. Is DUO membership based?

No, DUO is not a membership based organization.


4. Is Dance Umbrella of Ontario a charity?

No, DUO is not a charity. DUO is a Not for Profit non-membership based organization


5. How can DUO help me?

DUO offers a wide variety of services, some for clients only, some for the public at large. Our free services include:
  • Our bulletin board which lists calls and auditions, job postings, classes and workshops, and upcoming events. Posting is free, and anyone can drop by to check it out, within DUO office hours which are 10:00-5:00 Monday - Thursday, and 10:00-3:00 Friday.
  • The DUO e-list, which provides information on a variety of dance events throughout Ontario. To join our mailing list click HERE.
  • The DUO resource library is free for anyone to use. Books/periodicals may not be signed out, but may be read within the DUO office.
  • Artist Work Station with a computer, printer and internet access. (By appointment only, to make an appointment, click HERE.)
  • Video Dubbing stations (By appointment only, to make an appointment, click HERE.)
  • DUO's board room is available for meetings, subject to availability and notification. To inquire about the board room, please click HERE.

How do I become a DUO client?

Start by filling out our Online Consultation form.


7. What are DUO office hours?

10:00-5:00 Monday - Thursday, and 10:00-3:00 Friday.


8. Where is DUO, and how do I get there?


DUO is located at 490 Adelaide Street West, Suite 201. We're one block north of King Street, between Portland and Brant streets. For a map, click HERE.


9. Do you teach Dance Classes?

No, the Dance Umbrella of Ontario does NOT teach dance classes. We can provide contact information on various schools/institutes within Ontario that do teach classes, but we are purely an administrative facility. You can also search in the Yellow Pages under Dance Instruction.


10. What dance shows are currently happening in Ontario?

11. How can I be added to your mailing list (E-List)?

12. What grants are there available to help me create a new work/mount a show/mount a tour?

There are multiple funding bodies that provide grants to professional dancers. Nationally, there is the Canada Council for the Arts, Provincially there is the Ontario Arts Council. Locally, there are municipal arts councils, such as the Toronto Arts Council, Council for the Arts in Ottawa, the Peterborough Arts Council and others. Each of these organizations has a web page. If you want more information on what grants they have specific to them, you can contact them. If you want more assistance from DUO, please contact us for a free consultation.


13. I am a dancer looking for legal advice, can DUO help me?

No, DUO does not provide legal advice, but you can call the Artists' Legal Aid Services (ALAS), at 416-367-2527. They offer legal advice and educational services - lawyers on duty for ALAS are funded by the Ontario Legal Aid Plan.


14. Does DUO do mailings, and can I add information about my show to a DUO mailing?


DUO does do mail-outs of information for clients' upcoming shows. Our list of media contacts, and dance community contacts are available for purchase. For more information, please click HERE.


15. I am new to Toronto, how can I get in touch with the Dance Community here?


There are a lot of resources in Ontario to keep the dance community connected. The following organizations can help intorduce you to events going on in the community as well as provide information on companies and organizations you may want to check out.

16. I am a Dancer who needs counseling/retraining services. Can DUO help me?


DUO does not provide these services specifically. For help or assistance with either counseling, retraining, or a wealth of other dancer-related issues, please contact the Dancer Transition Resource Centre.
