Michael Caldwell, Toronto-based dancer/choreographer, is honoured and thrilled to present his first collaboration with the AKA Dance (directed by Amy Hampton & Keiko Ninomiya) and is proud to represent dance in this year’s Toronto Theatre Fringe Festival.
Two new choreographic duets, seven exciting shows…
Love, So Says…
Choreography: Michael Caldwell
Caldwell’s personal journey through love over the past year inspires this intensely physical duet. A break-up of a seven year relationship, adultery, bathhouses in Europe, and a spring wedding are but a few of the experiences infused in the work. Additionally, paintings on the theme of love provide further inspiration to the choreography’s visual language.
Faint Light
Choreography: Keiko Ninomiya for AKA Dance, www.akadance.ca
When you reach the depth of anger you will find that only tenderness remains.
Dora-nominated choreographer Keiko Ninomiya explores the deep relationship between anger and tenderness and how this manifests itself in our personal lives. Using the evocative music of Tetsuroh Konishi, the piece moves from meditative and distilled to explosive and raw.

Solid State presents
Take it Back
With "Take it Back", Solid State asks the question, "Why don't we dance in couples anymore?" The popularization among urban youth of dancing in mass groups (rave culture) or the soloing format of street forms such as Breakdancing, has created an environment where individuals can dance however and whenever they want to.
In an attempt to create a social partner dance that speaks to a generation of individuals, Solid State has paired the high physicality of B-boying (Breakdance) with the partnering structures of LindyHop (Swing) which like B-boying is a street dance based on free-styling or improvisation. This cooperation of styles breathes with freedom, and spontaneity as the dancers wrestle with the awkwardness of asking each other to dance, dancing close together, and shifting between leading and following roles.

Experience the radiance of Collective HEAT with Moments on a Wrist a program of dance stories that pay homage to the wrist featuring intriguing character driven choreography by Jen Cole, Meaghan Giusti, Sarah Lochhead and Heather M. Saum. and an original score created by Robert Kingsbury. Moments on a Wrist runs Thursday, July 3, 2008 till Sunday, July 13,2008 @ PASSE MURAILLE 16 RYERSON AVE (EAST OF BATHURST, NORTH OF QUEEN).
The evening features five creatively captivating dance works that reflect memories of the wrist. Including four world premiers. Moments past--a loved one’s scent, a handwritten letter, a poignant gesture--all stem from the wrist. Both delicate and enduring, the wrist supports us, interweaving our imaginative gestures and lack-luster mechanics of the daily grind. These articulated moments are acknowledged, cherished and sooner or later forgiven.
Junction 28 (world premiere) choreographed by Heather M. Saum, is driven by the abrupt change of living in rural Saskatchewan with never ending horizons, to the densely populated city of Toronto. The high-energy athletic movement illustrates the driving pace and urgency of mechanical time.
Still Plow (world premiere) choreographed by Sarah Lochhead, is based on a choreography chain letter project initiated by Heather M. Saum, which draws inspiration from the long lost art of letter writing and the relationships it cultivates.
Perfumed Paper (world premiere) choreographed by Jen Cole, is a quirky exploration of unique characters driven by their past experiences in a series of confrontations.
Slip (world premiere) choreographed by Meaghan Giusti, is a solo that celebrates a beautiful change in a woman’s life with strength, energy and wisdom leading her movement.
Moments on a Wrist choreographed by Jen Cole and Heather M. Saum, is a visceral and poignant recognition of conjured memories and their ability to haunt our every move.
Collective HEAT, founded in 2005, is a group of local dance artists dedicated to the exploration and creation of new dance works. With six original works in their current repertoire, Collective HEAT has performed at Series 8:08, International Dance Day, Squiggfest, In a White Room, York University, Robert Gill Theatre and for many festivals in Ontario and Saskatchewan.
Heather Saum, originally from Saskatchewan, is a choreographer, performer, teacher and the Artistic Director of Collective HEAT. She holds an Education degree, with an Interdisciplinary Arts focus, from the University of Regina, Saskatchewan and is a graduate of York University’s Master’s degree in dance. Her research in dance history and feminist performance studies greatly influences the work of Collective HEAT.
