In this workshop, we will explore the art of performance. Butoh is often seen as an internal dance. Things we do in butoh often feel remarkable as experiences, but not all of it is interesting to watch. What is it that makes a performer compelling? How do we saturate a performance with meaning? How do we practice this art? In this dance-theatre workshop we will work from vivid internal conditions expressed through intense physicality to train the body and imagination. Using Butoh, the contemporary Japanese dance form as a foundation, we will work to reveal the dance’s inner life of authenticity, depth and paradox, and to express one’s humanity in all of its irrationality, ugliness, beauty and mirth. Intermediate/advanced level workshop.
