Canadian artists gather in celebration of the art of Kathak
July 4, 2012 – Rina Singha Kathak Dance Organization is proud to announce its 5th annual Kathak Mahotsav Canada – ancient traditions to contemporary expressions, from September 20th to 23rd, 2012 at Studio Theatre, Harbourfront Centre, Toronto.
Kathak Mahotsav Canada 2012, now in its fifth year, is a festival of Kathak dance that is modeled after the springtime “Durbars” of the Moghul courts. It is a gathering of Canadian Kathak artists in celebration of the art of Kathak, showcasing the adaptability and relevance of classical Kathak styles, from its temple origins to the present.
The festival will include evening performances by prominent Canadian and international Kathak artists at 8pm on September 20th, 21st, and 22nd, and a closing matinee performance on September 23rd at 4pm. Not to be missed is the choreographers’ dance talk ‐ Choreographic Process Revealed ‐ at 3pm on Sunday, September 23rd.
This year’s programme features four concerts with different artists performing each night. The acts include duets and solos by Hemant and Vaishali Panwar, Sudeshna Maulik and Anjali Patil, Parul Gupta, Reshmi Chetram, and a special guest from India, Sayanee Chavda.
Ticket Prices: Adult single ticket ($30.50), Adult 4‐evening‐concert package ($108), discounted single ticket ($25) available for seniors, student and group booking. Visit www.harbourfrontcentre.com or call 416-973-4000 to book tickets.
The Kathak Mahotsav furthers Artist Director Rina Singha’s vision of sharing with Canadian dance audiences the lyrical beauty and subtleties that distinguish Kathak from other dance forms, and provide a deeper understanding of the rhythmic and narrative elements of Kathak. In 1998 and 2002, RSKDO, in partnership with the Music Gallery, presented the Legacies in Dance Festivals to highlight similarities and differences between Kathak and selected non‐western classical dance forms. Since 2008, RSKDO has focused its energy solely on Kathak by starting Kathak Mathosav Canada, an annual gathering of Kathak artists showcasing the wide range and varieties of Kathak styles in Canada.
Artistic Director Rina Singha’s extraordinary career as a solo Kathak performer and choreographer spans upwards of five decades. Recognized as one of Canada’s eminent dance artists, she has earned international acclaim and recognition for the elegant beauty and purity of her technique and the skill and wisdom of her interpretative powers.
Because of her own experiences as a struggling immigrant artist, Singha has made it her life mission to find ways to cross cultural barriers and to share the intricacies her art with audiences.
Rina Singha Kathak Dance Organization is grateful for the support of Ontario Arts Council. Kathak Mahotsav 2012 is proud to be a part of Harbourfront Centre’s NextSteps 2012/2013.
