SAMPRADAYA Dance Academy, a leading South Asian dance training organization, based in Mississauga, Canada is hiring a Senior Teacher for the Academy. This will be a full time position that will report directly to the Director and Artistic Head of the Academy.
SAMPRADAYA Dance Academy founded in 1990, is a well established and reputed organization that provides professional level training in bharatanatyam, a classical dance form from India. The Academy is designated a Professional Training Institution for bharatanatyam by the Department of Canadian Heritage, Government of Canada. Founded and directed by Lata Pada, a respected bharatanatyam dance performer, choreographer and teacher, the Academy has been at the forefront of South Asian dance in Canada. The Academy is nationally and internationally recognized for its excellence in training and for having created several professional dancers.
SAMPRADAYA Dance Academy is seeking a capable individual with strong training in bharatanatyam technique, repertoire and theory.
The ideal candidate will be a person trained for over ten years in bharatanatyam (preference given to a candidate trained in the Tanjore style of bharatanatyam and has received a Bachelor’s Degree in dance from a well known dance training institute in Canada or India. The candidate must have extensive performance experience and should have the expertise to teach advanced level classes, including the preparation of dancers for their full length solo debuts- arangetrams, as well as preparing students for certification and examinations in bharatanatyam.
The ideal candidate will be a highly motivated individual with multi-tasking skills and excellent written and oral communication skills, a knowledge of the professional dance sector. Language skills in Sanskrit, Tamil and Hindi will be strongly preferred. Ability to teach beginner to intermediate level classical Carnatic vocal music classes and theory and history of bharatanatyam will be an important criteria in the selection of the candidate. The candidate should also have extensive experience in choreography of new repertoire for performances and annual recitals, as well as knowledge and expertise in nattuvangam ( rhythm theory).
An important job criteria will be the ability to prepare all intermediate and advanced level students for the ISTD (Imperial Society of Teachers of Dancing) Certification exams.
Reporting directly to the Director of the Academy, the Senior Teacher will be responsible for the following:
- delivery of all training programs, general and professional
- creation and training of new repertoire for annual recitals and performances
- the rehearsal of the dance ensemble
- advanced level training for the ISTD (Imperial Society of Teachers of Dancing, England) certification and arangetram programs
- community and arts education outreach and performances
Salary : commensurate with qualifications and experience. This is a two-year contract position with the potential for renewal.
