The Redpath Waterfront Festival

The Redpath Waterfront Festival: All the Best on Land and Water

Tall Ships® Entire Fleet, Wharf at York Interactive History and After-Dark Water Show

Celebrate the start of summer in Toronto, with a visit to the Redpath Waterfront Festival,

June 20-23, to welcome the Tall Ships® fleet to Toronto and enjoy all the best on land and water.  Toronto will be the only port on the TALL SHIPS® 1812 Tour where the entire fleet can be seen in one location.  From the magnificent opening ceremonies, welcoming the captains and crew, to the final awe-inspiring Parade of Sail, presented by the City of Toronto, as the fleet continues on its journey around the Great Lakes. The tall ships will be the foreground and the background to Toronto’s annual urban beach party.

Bring the family: general admission is free. There will be something for everyone, from toddler to granny.  The tall ships will be moored along the full two kilometre length of the waterfront, from HTO West near the foot of Spadina Avenue to Sherbourne Common, near Sugar Beach. Ship deck tour tickets/wristbands can be purchased online now for a 30% discount at TOwaterfrontfest.com, or at the event – look for booths at Sherbourne Common, Harbour Square Park East, HTO Park, and at Harbourfront Centre.

Cruise the Waterfront

There’s so much to see along the Waterfront that the Toronto Port Authority is providing a Festival Water Shuttle to help you view it all at your leisure. Hop aboard at Sherbourne Common, York Street Slip or John Quay. Pay by donation, in support of Toronto Brigantine – Redpath Waterfront Festival’s designated charity (kids age 5 and under and ship deck tour wristband holders ride for FREE).

Tall Ships® sail in, loaded with history

The War of 1812 was fought on water as well as on the land. Three of the tall ships have links to those rousing times – Pride of Baltimore II, Privateer Lynx and US Brig Niagara are examples of the smaller fighting ships that held the might of the Royal Navy at bay.

Second year of the war – Fort York up in flames!

Interactive history takes place before your eyes!  At The Wharf at York the story of the attack on Fort York is told in 18min12sec, using today’s technology to tell the 200-year-old tale. Parks Canada adds to the local colour with this year’s edition of 1812 On Tour.

Harbourfront Centre

Free performances on the Redpath Stage, featuring the Metis Fiddler Quartet and Bold Steps-Canadian Step Dance that will entertain with clogs, jigs and reels.  Exhibition Common will feature a large-scale outdoor photographic exhibition of Toronto’s nine rivers and provide lots of information on sailing and power boating instruction as well as rental programs.

Excitement on the water

At Sugar Beach, see four demos daily of Flyboarding®, the coolest personal water jet pack ever. Times are listed at the event. At Sherbourne Common, Cinema H20 creates an after dark experience featuring lasers, fountains, music and pyrotechnics on Thursday, June 20 at 10:30 pm. and on Friday, June 21/Saturday, June 22 at 10:00 pm.

Urban folk music on the beach!

360/AM Emerge Artists Showcase presents workshops and main-stage concerts highlighting Toronto’s flourishing urban folk scene. Hosted by Shakura S’aida at Sugar Beach, Thursday through Saturday from noon – 10:00 pm daily, and Sunday from 11:00 am – 6:00 pm.

How to get there by public transportation or car

The TTC offers more frequent buses during peak periods and large festivals and events, which allows easy on and off access to the hot spots along the waterfront without having to worry about parking.  The waterfront will be accessible by car or taxi, but to keep traffic congestion to a minimum visitors are encouraged to park cars farther away from the waterfront and walk into the area or take public transportation. Bike racks are scattered along the waterfront, while parking lots can be found in a number of locations including Rees and Simcoe Street.  For further parking lots please visit Towaterfrontfest.com. Taxi stands are located next to the Queen’s Quay Terminal building at the foot of York Street. Traffic will flow one way only westbound along Queens Quay

The Redpath Waterfront Festival

The Redpath Waterfront Festival, in partnership with the Waterfront Business Improvement Area (WBIA), provides on-water and on-land programming that promotes Toronto locally, nationally and internationally as a premiere waterfront destination. Festival sponsors and presenters include City of Toronto, Toronto Port Authority, CTV, Toronto Star, Porter Airlines, Westin Harbour Castle and Parks Canada, among others.

Festival Hours are 10:00 am – 11:00 pm daily, except Sunday, 9:00 am to 6:00 pm. To avoid line-ups, purchase tall ship deck tour tickets online at TOwaterfrontfest.comor visit the web site for more specific information.

spaces between us

The space between us is a new Canadian dance performance that fuses music, theatre, spoken-word and poetry into a fantastic voyage through space and time. From the macro (the universe) to the micro (quantum foam), it is a sublime meditation on our astronomical origins, our place within the cosmos, the fundamental forces that bind and repel us, and anxieties surrounding distance, intimacy, and the inherent human need to connect.

Premiering in Toronto at the Dancemakers Center for Creation June 19th – 22nd

Tickets:

Student, Senior, CADA – $15   |  Regular Admission – $20

*Gala night June 22:  Student, Senior, CADA – $20   |  Regular Admission – $25

Final Savage Land Indiegogo Campaign

Sore for Punching You’s most recent full evening installation piece, Final Savage Land – premiered in Toronto, January 2013 – has been invited to be remounted in this years SummerWorks Festival

Inspired by two very separate entities, this choreographed duet takes place within an installation and explores questions about survival and inevitable co-dependency.  In part inspired by Avro Part’s piano composition Fur Alina, and part Grimm’s fairytale, the result of this unlikely coupling creates a disturbing beauty.

We are very excited to have a venue for this piece so soon but we cannot do it without help.  Please take a second to check out our campaign through Indiegogo and consider helping us on this venture.
